For eight months, the Vietnamese box office of 2026 belonged to Trấn Thành. His Tết film Thỏ Ơi!! took nearly 450 billion VND and sat alone at number one. Then, around October 18, an action film from a first-time feature director passed it. Trại Buôn Người has now reached more than 484 billion VND and is still in cinemas.

We ranked the films below by total domestic box office in 2026, using Box Office Vietnam figures as reported by Vietnamese outlets. Figures are rounded and still move for films in cinemas, so each entry says when the number was reported. Release dates and cast come from news reports on each film.

Note: Box Office Vietnam data was disrupted by a system intrusion in March 2026, and some producers published distributor figures instead. We use the rounded numbers most outlets repeat.

Quick picks

1. Trại Buôn Người

  • Year: 2026 (released September 25)
  • Creator: Directed by Toni Dương Bảo Anh; written by Bích Trang
  • Where to watch: In cinemas nationwide. No streaming date has been announced in the reports we found.

Trại Buôn Người follows a character named Ny who enters a fraud ring's compound to rescue his younger sister, then helps start an uprising among the other captives. The cast includes Steven Nguyễn, Minh Kiên, Quách Ngọc Ngoan, Tùng Min and People's Artist Như Quỳnh. Toni Dương Bảo Anh has about 20 years of experience in action cinema, including work on the Lật Mặt series, and this is their first feature as director.

VietnamPlus reports 100 billion VND in a little over three days, 300 billion in about ten days and 400 billion in 17 days. On October 18 it passed Thỏ Ơi!!, and by October 25 it had also passed Lật Mặt 7: Một Điều Ước (nearly 483 billion), according to Tiền Phong. VietnamPlus says the production used around 700 actors as extras playing victims and shot for almost four months.

Why it ranks #1: It is the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of 2026, and the legs are exceptional for a non-holiday release. Downside: The subject (online fraud and human trafficking) is dark, and weekend takings have slowed to about 11 billion VND.

2. Thỏ Ơi!!

  • Year: 2026 (Tết season, February)
  • Creator: Directed by Trấn Thành; cast includes LyLy, Vĩnh Đam, Văn Mai Hương, Pháo and Quốc Anh
  • Where to watch: Left cinemas. Check streaming platforms for any later release.

Thỏ Ơi!! is a psychological romance with thriller elements, rated T18. Tuổi Trẻ reported a budget of about US$2 million. It took more than 41 billion VND on February 20 (the fourth day of Tết), the biggest single day for a Vietnamese Tết film, and passed 300 billion VND on day nine.

Critics were mixed, but audiences came in huge numbers. Tết 2026 set a record of 618.6 billion VND across all films, and this film took about 55% of it, according to Vietnam News.

Why it ranks #2: It was the year's biggest hit for eight months and, per Tiền Phong, made the all-time top five when it left cinemas. Downside: It is polarising, and critics were mixed.

3. Nghỉ Hè Sợ Nghỉ Hưu

  • Year: 2026 (early screenings from August 14, for the September 2 holiday)
  • Creator: Directed by Huỳnh Lập; cast includes Cody Nam Võ, Cao Minh, Hứa Vĩ Văn and Hồng Ánh
  • Where to watch: Left cinemas. No streaming date found.

A family comedy with supernatural touches, released ahead of the National Day holiday. It reached about 193 billion VND by September 7 and about 207.7 billion VND by October 20, per Box Office Vietnam data reported by Tiền Phong and Saostar. Huỳnh Lập had said publicly that he wanted it to at least match the 242 billion VND earned by his earlier film Nhà Gia Tiên. It fell short of that, but it is still the year's third-biggest local release.

Why it ranks #3: It is the strongest family-friendly option on the list. Downside: Reviews after release were mixed.

4. Phí Phông: Quỷ Máu Rừng Thiêng

  • Year: 2026 (early screenings April 16; nationwide April 24)
  • Creator: Directed by Đỗ Quốc Trung; stars Kiều Minh Tuấn
  • Where to watch: Left cinemas. No streaming date found.

Folk horror drawing on local supernatural beliefs. Tuổi Trẻ reported it reached 200 billion VND after 39 days, making it the first Vietnamese horror film above that mark. Box Office Vietnam later listed it at about 201 billion VND. The film was a word-of-mouth hit and became Kiều Minh Tuấn's biggest film by gross. Znews says the average Vietnamese horror budget is under 20 billion VND.

Why it ranks #4: It is the biggest Vietnamese horror film ever by gross. Downside: Horror is not for everyone, and it is no longer in cinemas.

5. Quỷ Nhập Tràng 2

  • Year: 2026 (released March 13)
  • Creator: Directed by Pom Nguyễn; Vân Dung is in the cast
  • Where to watch: Left cinemas. No streaming date found.

The sequel to the horror hit Quỷ Nhập Tràng crossed 100 billion VND within a week of its official release, according to Box Office Vietnam. It topped the chart and beat Mỹ Tâm-produced Tài in its opening weeks. It left cinemas with nearly 134 billion VND (data to April 22). The first film earned about 149–150 billion VND, so the sequel did not match it.

Why it ranks #5: It is the strongest of several films that earned about 110–134 billion VND this year. Downside: Tiền Phong called its scares drawn out, and it earned less than the first film.

Just missed: As of April, Hẹn Em Ngày Nhật Thực (about 116 billion VND), Tài (about 113 billion) and Nhà Ba Tôi Một Phòng (about 111 billion) were all close behind. Final totals for those films were not confirmed, so we have not ranked them.

Practical tips

  • Check showtimes on the cinema apps. CGV, Galaxy, BHD and CineStar all screen local films, and Trại Buôn Người is still on in many cinemas.
  • Look at the age rating. Thỏ Ơi!! is T18, and the horror films carry restrictions too.
  • Check subtitles before you buy. These are Vietnamese-language films, and English subtitle availability varies by screening.
  • November films are tentative. A listing from Viettel Store shows Người Được Chọn (about spirit mediumship, November 6), Ngày Con Còn Mẹ (director Vũ Ngọc Đãng, November 11) and Trại Giam Hạnh Phúc (November 20). Dates may change.
